Moments after touchdown, the aircraft, a Bombardier CRJ900 operated by Endeavor Air, skidded violently on the icy runway, igniting sparks, and ultimately flipping onto its back. Passengers were in a state of shock as they found themselves suspended upside down, strapped into their seats while jet fuel leaked perilously close to them.
“This all happened in a heartbeat,” recounted Pete Carlson, a passenger on the flight, in an interview with CBC. “The moment the wheels hit the ground, everything went wrong.”
Miraculously, all 80 individuals aboard the flight from Minneapolis managed to evacuate, thanks to the courageous efforts of flight attendants and fellow passengers who assisted one another through the emergency exits. While at least 18 people sustained injuries, including two individuals—the child and an adult—who were listed in critical but stable condition, all were expected to survive.
By the end of the day, Delta Airlines reported that some of the injured passengers had already been discharged from the hospital, marking a fortuitous outcome after a series of recent aviation tragedies.
The incident occurred around 2:15 p.m. ET, during a challenging landing attempt given strong winds of approximately 40 miles per hour coupled with snow. Passenger Pete Koukov described the moment it all went awry: “One second you’re landing; the next, we’re sideways.”
With investigations underway, this incident serves as a sobering reminder of the unpredictability of air travel, though it also highlights the resilience and quick-thinking of both crew members and passengers in the face of danger.
