Cultural icons and philanthropists celebrated as recipients of America's highest civilian honor.
President Joe Biden has recognized the significant achievements of 19 individuals, awarding them the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom, America's highest civilian honor. Among the honorees are influential figures such as Vogue editor Dame Anna Wintour, U2 frontman Bono, and billionaire philanthropist George Soros. The White House has characterized these laureates as “good people who have made extraordinary contributions to their country and the world,” reflecting their commitment to various causes and fields.
During a special ceremony at the White House on Saturday, President Biden will present the medals to the recipients. Bono, whose real name is Paul David Hewson, has gained international acclaim not only for his musical career but also for his activism against poverty and support for HIV/AIDS awareness. He has previously received France's highest cultural honor and an honorary knighthood.
Anna Wintour has been a pivotal figure in the fashion industry, serving as editor-in-chief of Vogue since 1988. Beyond her editorial contributions, she has raised over $20 million for AIDS research and significantly aided UK arts organizations following severe funding cuts in 2022.
Alongside these luminaries, other notable recipients include former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who previously ran against Donald Trump and lost the 2016 election. The list also honors cultural icons such as actors Denzel Washington and Michael J. Fox, international soccer star Lionel Messi, and basketball legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson, while fashion designer Ralph Lauren joins the ranks.
Additional awardees include humanitarian chef José Andrés, renowned conservationist Jane Goodall, and science educator Bill Nye, all lauded for their contributions to society. Posthumous awards will be presented to significant figures such as former U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer.
Established under President John F. Kennedy, the Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded at the discretion of the sitting president, following recommendations from an external advisory panel. Past honorees reflect the diverse impact of the award, with recipients including the decorated gymnast Simone Biles, Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh, and tech visionary Steve Jobs.
