Bucharest's pro-EU mayor emerges victorious as tensions rise in Romania's political landscape.
In a dramatic conclusion to Romania's presidential election, Nicusor Dan, the liberal mayor of Bucharest known for his pro-EU stance, has decisively defeated George Simion, the leader of the far-right AUR party. After months of political unrest marked by the annulment of a previous election due to allegations of Russian interference, Dan secured 54% of the votes on a tense Sunday run-off, even as Simion gained traction among voters abroad.
The election saw over 11.6 million Romanians participating, with Dan garnering the support of more than six million voters. Despite delays in vote counting that kept supporters in suspense well into the night, Dan’s victory celebration erupted in Bucharest as he assured citizens of a future focused on unity. "We need to build Romania together irrespective of who you voted for," he declared earnestly once his win was confirmed.
His election comes at a turbulent time when many Romanians are disillusioned with mainstream politics. The collapse of the previous government, prompted by a failure to progress in the elections, intensified the calls for change across the nation. Dan, a mathematician by profession, campaigned heavily on principles of anti-corruption and continued support for Ukraine, while Simion advocated for cutting ties with the EU, inciting fear of a nationalist agenda.
Celebrating his victory, supporters rallied in the streets chanting praises for Dan, contrasting sharply with the worrying sentiments expressed by some voters who had backed Simion. Despite initial refusal to concede, Simion eventually acknowledged Dan's win on social media, hinting at the potential for continued political strife amongst his followers.
While Simion had previously garnered substantial support from Romanian diaspora in Western Europe, who rallied behind him in the first round, it was Dan's voters who turned out in even larger numbers during the decisive run-off. The newly elected president has since received congratulatory messages from leaders across the region, including Moldova's Maia Sandu and Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky, both emphasizing solidarity and collaboration moving forward.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen commended the high voter turnout and the inclination towards an open, promising Romania within a strong European framework. Dan's victory stands as a rebuke to nationalist sentiment, marking a pivotal moment that some hope will guide Romania back toward its European roots despite the nationalist narrative that still echoes among certain voter segments.
