The lead poisoning incident affecting kindergartners in western China has exposed egregious malpractice by health and education officials, whose attempts to cover up the health crisis have ignited widespread public outrage.

Provincial health authorities in Gansu Province have acknowledged that officials and hospital staff manipulated blood test results linked to a lead poisoning crisis that impacted over 250 preschool children. The scandal, which has been a major topic of discussion in China, stems from food tainted with lead, and has exposed a significant cover-up involving multiple layers of government oversight.

The investigation revealed that the Tianshui kindergarten involved was operating without the necessary licenses, and had accepted illegal gifts from a school investor. According to the report, inspections of food safety at the school were rushed and ineffective. This messy case is particularly alarming given the misuse of powdered pigments, employed by the school as food coloring, which contained upwards of 20% lead. Initial tests showed lead levels in the children’s food that exceeded the national safety standards by 2,000 times.

Public outrage surged as parents expressed their suspicions of a cover-up long before the investigation's conclusions. Some parents took the initiative to have their children tested in different provinces, fearing that their local health services were not transparent. The report confirmed these fears when it was revealed that one child had exhibited elevated lead levels over six months, with no warnings issued by Tianshui No. 2 People’s Hospital. Alarmingly, the hospital was found to have altered blood test records, significantly downplaying the actual lead levels identified in two other children.
