Zelensky Reports 50,000 Russian Troops in Kursk Amid Ongoing Conflict
Ukrainian President highlights military operations preventing Russian advances.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the recent military operations in Russia's Kursk region are currently containing around 50,000 Russian troops. In his daily address to the nation, he emphasized that this maneuver is effectively limiting Moscow's capability to launch further attacks within Ukraine itself. Despite differing views from some Western allies, the president has stated that this has been a primary goal of the offensive.
The Institute for the Study of War, a U.S. nonprofit organization, noted that at the beginning of Ukraine's unexpectedly bold incursion into Kursk in early August, there were approximately 11,000 Russian troops stationed there. A report from the New York Times indicates that Russia has managed to bolster its troop presence in Kursk without extracting soldiers from other fronts in Ukraine. This report also states that North Korean troops are being deployed in Kursk to support an anticipated Russian counter-offensive.
During his address, Zelensky noted that he received insights from Commander-in-Chief Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyy, who earlier carried out an inspection of the Ukrainian units stationed in Kursk. "Our men are holding back... 50,000 of the occupier's army personnel who, due to the Kursk operation, cannot be deployed to other Russian offensive directions on our territory," Zelensky expressed.
Gen. Syrskyy supported this by stating that, without the presence of Ukrainian forces in Kursk, "tens of thousands of enemies from the best Russian assault units would have been storming" Ukrainian positions in Donetsk, an area that has seen heavy conflict over the last ten years. As both sides engage in combat, there are claims of mutual damage to infrastructure, specifically a dam near Kurakhove, a town under Ukrainian control.
Simultaneously, a new report has surfaced, citing Russian and North Korean troops in position in Kursk for a potential counter-offensive, anticipated to be 50,000 in total. The report highlights that the Russian military can sustain operations on multiple fronts without reallocating troops from eastern Ukraine, the primary theater of conflict.
Both Ukraine and the U.S. have corroborated that over 10,000 North Korean soldiers have been dispatched to Russia for military support. The Kremlin, however, has declined to confirm or deny the presence of North Korean forces in Kursk. Notably, discussions between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this year have deepened ties between the two nations since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
In related developments, amid speculation concerning the consequences of Donald Trump's recent election as president, the Kremlin dismissed reports of a phone conversation between Trump and Putin, during which Trump allegedly cautioned against escalating the war and referenced America's military footprint in Europe.
