ZANU-PF Turmoil: Mnangagwa Confronts Internal Rebellions

In a dramatic escalation, Zimbabwe's President faces dissent within his party as protests to demand his resignation loom.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa's grip on power is threatened by his own party amidst a nation grappling with severe economic woes.

Zimbabwe is experiencing upheaval as President Emmerson Mnangagwa grapples with increasing dissent from members of his ruling ZANU-PF party. Nearly eight years following the coup that led to his rise, calls for mass protests demanding his resignation have intensified. During a recent party meeting, Mnangagwa condemned these movements as "treasonous," dismissing his critics as "chameleon-like characters" in a bid to retain control.

This internal strife poses a significant challenge in a nation already beset by years of economic hardship, which has left citizens apprehensive about the potential for violence as tensions mount. Zimbabwe's inflation crisis continues unabated, with the currency's instability exacerbating poverty levels across the country.

The Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce estimates that a staggering 80 percent of employment occurs in the informal sector, which is characterized by low wages and minimal job security, pushing families to fend for themselves.

Internationally, Zimbabwe’s reputation has deteriorated due to allegations of corruption, electoral malpractice, and human rights violations against the current regime, resulting in sanctions imposed by the United States targeting Mnangagwa and other members of the ruling elite. The country’s struggle for political stability intensifies as leaders within the ZANU-PF push for accountability, igniting fears of further civil unrest in the near future.
