The Easter weekend takes a grim turn as dangers escalate along Australia's picturesque coastline.
On the eve of the Easter weekend, the large swells have transformed popular coastal areas into perilous zones, prompting warnings from authorities. In a sorrowful report, officials confirmed that five people have drowned, while search efforts continue for two others, feared lost in the tumultuous waters off the shores of New South Wales and Victoria.
Tragedy struck when a body was recovered near Tathra, NSW, just a day after a 58-year-old fisherman and two men were found dead in separate incidents related to the severe conditions. In a separate occurrence on Friday, a woman drowned off the coast of San Remo in Victoria, while authorities continue the search for a man who was swept into the turbulent sea near Sydney. One woman from the group was lucky enough to return to shore but tragically lost contact with her companions.
Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan expressed her deep condolences, stating it marks a "terrible start" to the Easter festivities. "My thoughts are with the family of those who have lost their lives under such tragic circumstances, and we may have more sad news to come," she remarked.
With the eastern states grappling with the unprecedented surf conditions, the head of Surf Life Saving Australia, Adam Weir, has urged holidaymakers to only swim at patrolled beaches, highlighting the alarming statistic of 630 drownings at unpatrolled locations over the last decade. "Coastal locations come with inherent dangers, some visible and some concealed. Our simple advice remains: Stop, Look, Stay Alive," Weir stated, emphasizing the need for caution amidst the beautiful yet treacherous coastal landscape of Australia.
