Whistleblower Uncovers Widespread Pollution by Colombian Oil Company

A former Ecopetrol employee reveals extensive environmental damage and lack of transparency in company practices.

A whistleblower's revelations about Colombian energy firm Ecopetrol have exposed alarming pollution levels affecting water sources, wetlands, and wildlife. The leaked data indicates that the company has a history of failing to report significant environmental incidents.

Ecopetrol, Colombia's state-owned energy giant, has been implicated in serious pollution issues affecting numerous ecosystems, according to findings by the BBC World Service. Internal data leaked by whistleblower Andrés Olarte disclosed over 800 records of oil spills and contaminated sites between 1989 and 2018, revealing that around 20% of these incidents went unreported. This situation raises concerns within local communities who depend on the Magdalena River, where pollution has reportedly endangered wildlife, including manatees, river turtles, and various bird species.

Despite Ecopetrol claiming it adheres to national laws and maintains rigorous sustainability practices, community members manifest their skepticism. Yuly Velásquez, president of a local fishing federation, shared troubling observations such as fish emitting crude oil smells and excessive dead wildlife. Ecopetrol maintained its innocence, attributing some spills to external sabotage; however, internal assessments indicated that oil leaks continued well into recent years.

The whistleblower, who joined Ecopetrol in 2017, expressed concern over the lack of transparency regarding pollution levels, fearing that the company sought to conceal certain incidents from Colombian authorities. After facing threats linked to his investigations, Olarte continues to advocate for accountability and environmental protection while residing in Germany.

The repercussions of Ecopetrol’s practices extend beyond environmental degradation, revealing a grim reality for local defenders, with Colombia being labeled the most dangerous country for environmental activists. Ongoing conflicts involving illegal armed groups, local environmental advocates, and oil interests paint a concerning picture of safety and accountability in environmental governance.

As the community faces threats for exposing the truth, Velásquez and her peers remain resolute, stating their commitment to safeguarding both their livelihoods and the surrounding ecosystems. The challenges posed by Ecopetrol’s effects on the environment underscore the urgent need for transparency and collaborative action toward sustainable practices.
