Legendary Schumacher's 2001 Monaco Grand Prix Ferrari Fetches £13.43m at Auction
Iconic F1 car sold at RM Sotheby’s event before Monaco Grand Prix.
The Ferrari that propelled Michael Schumacher to victory at the 2001 Monaco Grand Prix has been sold for a staggering €15.98 million (£13.43 million) at auction. This iconic vehicle, known as the F2001, was not only instrumental in his triumph at Monaco but also played a crucial role in securing Schumacher's fourth world title that same year with victories at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The auction took place via RM Sotheby’s just before the qualifications for this year’s Monaco Grand Prix, making the sale particularly timely. This F2001 has now become the most expensive car associated with Schumacher, 56, to be sold at auction, and the fourth most expensive F1 car in history. The all-time record was recently established in February, when a Mercedes ‘streamliner’ previously driven by racing legends Sir Stirling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio fetch a jaw-dropping £42.75 million.
Prior to this auction, the highest bid ever recorded for a car driven by Schumacher stood at £9.75 million for his F2003 in 2002. As anticipation builds for the upcoming Monaco race, Ferrari will be looking to recapture the magic of 2001, with Charles Leclerc preparing to compete from a promising second position on the grid behind McLaren's Lando Norris.
