Giant Tortoises at Philadelphia Zoo Celebrate Historic Hatchlings

First-time parents Abrazzo and Mommy welcome four endangered tortoise hatchlings.

The Philadelphia Zoo rejoices in an unprecedented event as two giant tortoises, aged about 100, become proud parents with the birth of four hatchlings.

In a remarkable milestone for Philadelphia Zoo, two critically endangered Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoises are now first-time parents. Abrazzo and Mommy, both approximately 100 years old, recently welcomed four adorable hatchlings, marking a historic event in the zoo's 150-year legacy. The zoo expressed their excitement, stating they were "overjoyed" at this unique achievement.

Mommy, who has been a resident of the zoo since 1932, holds the title of the oldest known first-time mother of her species. With fewer than 50 Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoises in U.S. zoos, this birth is a crucial contribution to the survival of this critically endangered species.

The first egg hatched on February 27, with the remaining ones soon following. The hatchlings, weighing between 70 and 80 grams, are currently being cared for in the zoo's behind-the-scenes Reptile and Amphibian House, with their growth closely monitored by the animal care team. The zoo plans to publicly debut the hatchlings on April 23, coinciding with the 93rd anniversary of Mommy's arrival at the facility.

These hatchlings are part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' breeding program, which focuses on the preservation of genetic diversity among species. According to the zoo's president and CEO Jo-Elle Mogerman, this birth represents a significant achievement, underscoring the importance of their mission in supporting the survival of Galapagos tortoises. "The vision for Philadelphia Zoo is for these hatchlings to contribute to a healthy population of Galapagos tortoises on our thriving planet a century from now," she stated. Abrazzo joined the Philadelphia team in 2020 after moving from the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in South Carolina, complementing Mommy's long-established presence at the zoo.

This exciting development not only captivates visitors but also heralds hope for the future of this endangered species.
