Ransomware Attack Disrupts Major Companies, Including Starbucks

The recent cyberattack on Blue Yonder has left Starbucks and other major retailers grappling with service interruptions, postponing payroll and scheduling systems.

A ransomware attack targeting Blue Yonder, a supply chain management firm, has affected operations for companies like Starbucks and Morrisons. As these businesses revert to manual processes, they face challenges in staff payment and inventory management.

In a troubling development for several major retailers, a ransomware attack on Arizona-based Blue Yonder has caused significant disruptions in their operations. Notably affected is Starbucks, which has resorted to the outdated method of managing employee schedules using pen and paper due to the cyber incident, which also hindered the company’s payroll functions.

The attack's repercussions extend beyond the coffee giant; one of Britain’s largest grocery chains, Morrisons, has acknowledged similar issues. The attack disrupted its warehouse management systems for fresh produce, affecting stock and supply logistics.

Blue Yonder, which specializes in digital and AI-driven supply chain management solutions, reported that the incident is tied to disruptions within its managed services hosted environment. Despite efforts to rectify the situation with external cybersecurity assistance, a definitive timeline for restoration remains unclear.

Founded in 1985, Blue Yonder serves approximately 3,000 clients across various sectors, providing pivotal support in areas such as inventory management and payroll processing. However, the company has yet to disclose specific details on the full extent of the attack's impact or which clients are affected.

Starbucks has publicly assured its employees that they will be paid for all hours worked despite the operational challenges. A spokesperson confirmed that customer service remains unaffected as the company works to resolve the internal complications.

As the situation unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by companies relying heavily on digital infrastructure for their critical operations. The urgency for improved cybersecurity measures is more pronounced than ever as businesses navigate the consequences of such cyber incidents.
