In a devastating incident on Saturday morning, a Russian drone strike on a civilian minibus in the northeastern town of Bilopillia has left nine individuals dead and seven others injured, according to Ukrainian officials. The minibus, which was en route to Sumy, the regional capital near the Russian border, was struck at 6:17 AM local time (03:17 GMT).

The attack occurred just hours after Russia and Ukraine engaged in their first face-to-face talks in over three years. Although the discussions did not yield significant progress, a prisoner exchange agreement was reached, allowing both sides to return 1,000 prisoners of war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the bus attack, labeling it a "deliberate killing of civilians." He emphasized that Russian forces should have been aware they were targeting a civilian vehicle, pointing out that a family—a mother, father, and their daughter—were among those who lost their lives in the airstrike.

Oleh Hryhorov, regional head of Sumy, described the drone attack as "inhumane," underlining the severity of the ongoing conflict. Initially, Russian state media claimed the strike targeted a "military staging area" in the Sumy province, although this assertion was met with skepticism.

Following the Istanbul talks, Ukraine reiterated its demand for a full and unconditional ceasefire, but negotiations remained fraught with obstacles. The next step might involve direct discussions between Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, although Russia indicated it had merely taken note of Ukraine's request.

Meanwhile, U.S. claims suggested that meaningful progress toward peace would necessitate a face-to-face meeting between former President Donald Trump and Putin. During a recent Middle East visit, Trump suggested that no substantive developments would occur until his discussion with Putin took place.

Since launching its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has intensified military actions, particularly with drone strikes across the Sumy region.
