A chaotic scene unfolds in Strasbourg as two trams collide, resulting in numerous injuries and an ongoing investigation.
At least 30 individuals sustained injuries following a tram collision in the heart of Strasbourg on Saturday, as confirmed by local authorities. Social media footage captured the distressing aftermath, showing two trams with passengers onboard amidst billowing smoke and frantic alarm sounds.
Reports from local media indicate the collision happened when one tram switched to a different track and crashed into a stationary one, with additional claims suggesting that one tram was in reverse at the time. An investigation has been initiated to determine the specifics surrounding the incident, with no fatalities reported to date.
Strasbourg's Mayor Jeanne Barseghian addressed the media, acknowledging the incident but asserting that the cause remains unclear as they await findings from the investigation. Eyewitness Johan recounted hearing a loud bang right before observing one tram reversing at high speed. Another witness described how the doors were dislodged upon impact.
In response to the crash, a significant security perimeter has been established around the station area. The local Fire and Rescue Service issued a notice on X, encouraging the public to steer clear of the vicinity to facilitate emergency operations. According to Rene Cellier, the service's director, non-fatal injuries mainly comprised trauma alongside injuries like scalp wounds and fractures, affecting around 100 individuals who were subsequently examined by medical staff.
A substantial response was coordinated, involving approximately 50 vehicles and 130 firefighters. Emmanuel Auneau, director of CTS, the entity overseeing public transportation in Strasbourg, stated that while both tram operators emerged from the incident without physical injuries, they were visibly shaken by the event.
