Convicted Murderer of British Backpacker Peter Falconio Dies in Custody
Bradley Murdoch, imprisoned for the 2001 murder of Peter Falconio, succumbs to terminal cancer at 67.
Bradley Murdoch, the Australian man found guilty of murdering British backpacker Peter Falconio, has passed away at the age of 67. Murdoch was serving a life sentence in a prison located in Alice Springs, Northern Territory, where he had recently been hospitalised due to terminal throat cancer. The Northern Territory Department of Corrections confirmed the death of a man in custody to the BBC.
In 2005, Murdoch was convicted for the murder of Falconio, who was shot along a secluded highway near Barrow Creek in July 2001 while traveling across Australia with his girlfriend, Joanne Lees. Murdoch has consistently withheld the location of Falconio's remains. During the horrifying incident, Murdoch also attempted to kidnap and assault Ms Lees, who managed to escape into the outback for several hours before securing help.
Murdoch was 43 years old when the crimes took place, which also partly inspired the infamous 2001 horror film "Wolf Creek." Just last month, police in Australia unveiled a new reward of A$500,000 (approximately £240,000) for information leading to the discovery of Falconio's remains. Acting Commander Mark Grieve of Northern Territory Police expressed hope during a press conference held in late June, stating that they continue to seek substantial information regarding the case.
Commander Grieve indicated that attempts had been made to engage Murdoch regarding the location of the remains, but he had chosen not to cooperate with authorities on numerous occasions. Emphasising the need for closure, Commander Grieve mentioned that discussions had occurred with Falconio's family regarding the reward to assist in bringing some resolution to their ordeal.
