# New Perspective on Marc Fogel: A Teacher Caught in a Diplomatic Crisis

Marc Fogel had ventured frequently to Russia, having made it his second home as a history teacher at the Anglo-American School in Moscow for nearly a decade. However, his journey turned perilous on his return in August 2021. Accused of drug smuggling for possessing less than an ounce of cannabis—used for managing chronic back pain—Fogel faced severe repercussions. In June 2022, he was sentenced to 14 years in a high-security facility, where sentences for even violent crimes often fall short.

Following persistent lobbying from officials in Washington, the 63-year-old educator regained his freedom on Tuesday after spending three-and-a-half years behind bars. He and his wife, Jane, had aspired to enjoy a global retirement, having lived in diverse countries such as Colombia and Oman.

Similar to other American detainees, including basketball player Brittney Griner and journalist Evan Gershkovich, Fogel became entangled in the escalating hostilities between the U.S. and Russia, particularly after the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Notably, Mr. Fogel had previously enjoyed diplomatic immunity; however, in a significant shift, Russia revoked this due to deteriorating relations. The Anglo-American School, which once served as a refuge for expatriate educators, was forced to close in 2022.
