Survivors Critique Pope Francis's Response to Clergy Sexual Abuse

As the Catholic Church contemplates a new leader, abuse victims argue more action was needed to confront the ongoing crisis of clerical sexual abuse.

Survivors of clerical sexual abuse express skepticism about Pope Francis's efforts to tackle the persistent issue within the Church, highlighting a legacy marked by unrealized accountability and a demand for greater reform as cardinals convene in Rome.

The topic of sexual abuse within the Catholic Church is set to regain urgency as 135 cardinals gather in Rome to discuss the selection of a new pope, with many survivors of clerical abuse questioning whether Pope Francis did enough to address the long-standing crisis. Although he has taken steps to recognize victims and reform some internal protocols, those affected feel his actions fell short.

One such victim, Alexa MacPherson, endured abuse from the age of three at the hands of priest Peter Kanchong for six years. "For me, it was pretty much an everyday occurrence," she shared as she reflected on her traumatic past during a meeting on the Boston waterfront.

Concerns about the Church's power and influence in Boston during the 1980s complicate her narrative. After her father discovered the abuse, he reported it to the police. Yet, a behind-the-scenes letter addressed to a bishop in Thailand by then-Archbishop of Boston Bernard Law demonstrated that the Church prioritized its own image over accountability. Despite knowing Kanchong was unfit for duty, Law suggested he be sent back to Thailand to avoid scandal. The priest eventually evaded serious repercussions, continuing to work in local communities.

While the contentious legacy of Pope Francis looms, many survivors like MacPherson feel the Church has not sufficiently addressed the systemic sexual exploitation of children, a crisis still unfolding decades later. She expressed ambivalence about the Pope's death, acknowledging his contributions but emphasizing that far more must be done by Church authorities.

In response to calls for accountability, MacPherson insists the Church must fully disclose information about abusive priests and those who protected them. "It's the abuse being celebrated, in a way," she lamented, as the coverage of Francis's passing overshadowed the enduring silence around the mechanisms of abuse within the institution.

With the ongoing struggles of survivors to achieve justice, many believe that the reforms implemented under Francis are neither comprehensive nor sufficient. MacPherson's lawyer pointed out that much of the Church continues to operate in secrecy, actively hindering the discovery of abuse-related documents.

At 85, Kanchong has yet to face formal charges despite his lengthy history of accusations. The Catholic Church's published records indicate that his case is "not yet resolved," and MacPherson has sought to have him defrocked, a process obstructed by Church regulations.

As the election of a new pope approaches, MacPherson holds little hope for significant changes. "You cannot possibly do any of that until you truly acknowledge those sins, and you hold those people accountable," she stated, reinforcing the urgent call for genuine reform and transparency within the Church.
