Edan Alexander to Be Released from Hamas Custody
The last American citizen held by Hamas, Edan Alexander, is set to be freed as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate.
Edan Alexander, a 21-year-old dual American-Israeli citizen, is now the last living American held captive by Hamas in Gaza, with the militant group announcing plans for his release just as President Trump prepares for a trip to the Middle East.
A resident of Tenafly, New Jersey, Alexander joined Garin Tzabar in 2022, an organization that helps international youths integrate into the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Post-graduation, he moved to Israel and was assigned to the infantry, stationed near the Gaza border in September 2023.
His abduction occurred during a Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023. While under their custody, Hamas released a video featuring Mr. Alexander, heightening concerns for his safety. His friend, Omer Neutra, who served alongside him, was also taken that day but tragically lost his life during the conflict, with the White House confirming in December that Hamas had retained his remains.
The Alexander family, deeply affected by their son's situation, has actively sought his freedom by engaging with government officials and participating in public demonstrations. In heartfelt communications, they expressed their overwhelming distress, especially following the discovery of other hostages' fates. Recently, the Alexanders traveled to Israel, accompanied by officials from the Trump administration, expressing immense gratitude for their son's imminent return and advocating that “no hostage should be left behind.”
