Trump Criticizes European Leaders Over Ukraine Conflict Resolution
In a recent interview, Trump claims Macron and Starmer have not taken significant steps to end the Ukraine war.
In a pointed interview with Fox News, US President Donald Trump expressed frustration at both French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, claiming they “haven't done anything” to effectively address the ongoing war in Ukraine. With impending visits to the White House by both leaders, Trump did not hold back, suggesting that Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has “no cards” in current discussions, stating, “I don’t think he’s very important to be in meetings.”
Amidst the backdrop of continued military support provided to Ukraine by the UK, France, and other allies since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, the diplomatic landscape remains fraught. Just a day prior to Trump's remarks, European leaders convened in Paris for a crisis summit focused on Ukraine, with the intention of shaping strategies ahead of US-Russia negotiations set to occur in Saudi Arabia.
Despite his critical tone, Trump acknowledged a certain level of respect toward Macron, characterizing him as a “friend,” and gave Starmer a nod, calling him “a very nice guy.” Macron is scheduled to arrive in Washington DC on Monday, while Starmer will visit later in the week. In a recent statement, Starmer expressed a willingness to deploy UK troops to Ukraine for security purposes, a move that has sparked discussions back home.
The ongoing conflict has seen the US, UK, EU, and other nations enforce over 20,000 sanctions against Russia, demonstrating a strong commitment to supporting Ukraine. Earlier this year, Starmer entered into a significant 100-year pact with Ukraine, reinforcing long-term support for the nation anticipated to extend well beyond the current conflict.
Further complicating matters, Trump’s envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, shared that he had positive interactions with Zelensky during their latest meeting in Kyiv, directly contradicting Trump’s prior comments where he likened Zelensky to a “dictator.” Despite this friction, Zelensky continues to engage with leaders globally, endeavoring to ensure Ukraine's involvement in future peace dialogues.
In Trump's Fox News interview, he reiterated that peace negotiations would likely falter without his personal engagement, casting aspersions on Zelensky’s negotiating capabilities. As the situation evolves, he criticized Zelensky for his perceived failure to prevent the war, suggesting that Russia could have been deterred from invasion through effective diplomacy.
Commenting on Ukraine's absence from recent peace talks in Saudi Arabia, Trump posited that Russia was unwilling to make a deal with Zelensky, asserting that Russia is keen on reaching an agreement, yet not compelled to do so.
Moreover, discussions are underway regarding a US proposal that would allow the country to reclaim a portion of its military support through rights to Ukraine's rare earth minerals. Trump asserted that Ukraine and the US are nearing a deal, insisting that Zelensky and Putin must reconcile personal differences to achieve peace. Conversely, Zelensky previously dismissed the proposal as insufficiently serious.
As the dialogue continues, key figures from both sides hope to navigate the complex waters of diplomacy, aiming for a sustainable resolution to the ongoing conflict.
