Fare-Dodging Passenger's Daring Train Escape Ends Unharmed

A Hungarian man clings to the outside of a speeding German train after missing his stop while trying to evade ticket checks.

A passenger attempting to dodge train fare found himself clinging between carriages of a high-speed train traveling at 282 km/h. After his daring ride, he faces investigations for benefit fraud and disruption to operations.

In a shocking incident on Germany's high-speed ICE train, a Hungarian man clung to the exterior of the train after missing his chance to board properly. The 40-year-old, initially on board in Munich, decided to take a smoke break at the Ingolstadt station. However, his cigarette break turned chaotic when he lingered, causing the doors to close with him still outside.

With no ticket and no way back inside, the fare-dodger jumped onto a bracket located between two carriages, gripping onto safety cables as the train accelerated toward Nuremberg at remarkable speeds of up to 282 km/h (175 mph). Passengers witnessed the risky maneuver and promptly alerted authorities. Federal police contacted the train driver, leading to an unscheduled stop in Kinding, Upper Bavaria, approximately 30 km from the station.

Unbelievably, the man emerged from his perilous journey unscathed. A police officer traveling on the train discovered him and assisted him back inside, where he was then handed over to federal police upon reaching Nuremberg central station. Additionally, he revealed that he had left personal belongings on the train and was anxious about being separated from them.

Authorities are now investigating the man for alleged benefit fraud and disruption of train operations, both serious offenses under German law. Federal police have cautioned the public against attempting similar reckless actions, emphasizing the dangers of such behavior aboard trains.
