Stanley Issues Recall for Over 2 Million Travel Mugs Due to Burn Risk
Popular drinkware brand Stanley recalls nearly 2.6 million travel mugs amid concerns of safety hazards with loose lids leading to burns.
After receiving alarming reports of burn injuries due to dangerous lid detachments, Stanley has recalled approximately 2.6 million travel mugs. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall on Thursday, affecting all Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel mugs sold from June 2016 until December 2024.
The defect involves the mugs' polypropylene lids, which can experience shrinkage when subjected to heat and torque. This shrinkage can lead to the lid detaching while in use, posing a significant burn hazard to users. Sold at major retailers, including Amazon, Walmart, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Target, these mugs range in price from $20 to $50 and are available in various colors and sizes from 12 to 20 ounces.
Stanley reported that there have been a total of 91 global instances where the lids detached, including 16 in the U.S., resulting in 38 burn injuries. The Seattle-based company has stated its commitment to product quality and urged customers to cease use of the affected mugs and request a free replacement lid.
Stanley, founded over a century ago by inventor William Stanley Jr., has recently gained immense popularity, especially among millennials, largely fueled by social media influencers. The Stanley tumbler, although separate from the recalled products, has surged in recognition on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, where it has become a fashionable item and collector's accessory, receiving millions of engagements under the hashtag #StanleyTumbler.
As Stanley continues to address concerns and enhance product safety, customers are encouraged to reach out for assistance regarding the recalled travel mugs.
