Sam Altman's sister files a lawsuit alleging years of abuse, prompting public denial from the tech mogul and his family.
Sam Altman, the prominent CEO of OpenAI, is facing serious allegations from his sister, Ann Altman, who has filed a lawsuit claiming that he regularly sexually abused her from 1997 to 2006. The lawsuit was submitted on January 6 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, with Ann alleging that the abuse began when she was just three years old and Sam was twelve.
In a statement shared on X, Sam Altman, alongside his mother and two brothers, vehemently denied the accusations, asserting, "All of these claims are utterly untrue." The statement outlined the struggles of caring for a family member dealing with mental health issues, indicating that family support has been a challenging endeavor.
Mr. Altman mentioned that he provides consistent financial assistance to his sister, covering her bills and rent, and even offered to purchase a house but noted that she persistently requests more money. However, Ann Altman's lawsuit details accusations of being "groomed and manipulated" by her brother, claiming that he engaged in numerous abusive acts, including "rape, sexual assault, molestation, sodomy, and battery," as outlined in court documents examined by the BBC. According to her claims, she has endured significant emotional and physical injuries leading to extensive medical and mental health expenses.
Mr. Altman stated that their family has made various attempts to support Annie in seeking stability but highlighted the necessity of professional guidance to avoid enabling potentially harmful behaviors. He expressed the familial toll that this situation has taken, indicating that it brings immense pain to everyone involved.
The allegations purportedly include incidents of abuse committed while Sam was an adult and his sister was still a minor. In the past, Ann has also voiced similar accusations against Sam on social media, raising significant public concern.
Sam Altman, who tied the knot with partner Oliver Mulherin in 2024, remains a pivotal figure in technology following the launch of the ChatGPT generative AI chatbot in late 2022, which has gained widespread use for its versatility in generating various forms of text and images. Recently, in a dramatic corporate turn, Altman returned to his CEO position at OpenAI after being briefly dismissed by the board, a move that sparked discussion in tech circles.
As this complex family matter unfolds, both parties are poised to present their cases in court, a legal battle that might attract attention amid the backdrop of technological advancement and corporate challenges surrounding OpenAI.
