BANGKOK (AP) — Thailand’s Supreme Court stated that former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra must fulfill a one-year prison term due to earlier convictions. The court's investigation focused on the circumstances surrounding his return to Thailand in 2023 to commence serving his sentences.

Upon his return after living in self-exile for over a decade, Thaksin was initially taken to a suite at Bangkok’s Police General Hospital, allegedly for health reasons, just a few hours after entering prison.

Although he was originally sentenced to eight years imprisonment for multiple cases related to corruption and the abuse of power, King Maha Vajiralongkorn commuted his sentence to one year. Thaksin subsequently spent only six months in the hospital before being released on parole.

The situation has sparked debate about whether he was given preferential treatment and raised skepticism about the authenticity of his medical condition.
