Namibia's Founding Father, Sam Nujoma, Passes Away at 95
The first president of Namibia, Sam Nujoma, has died, leaving behind a legacy of independence and national unity.
Sam Nujoma, who played a crucial role in Namibia's fight for independence, has passed away at the age of 95, according to an announcement made by the country's current leader, President Nangolo Mbumba. Nujoma was a co-founder of the South West Africa People's Organisation (Swapo) in 1960, a movement that sought to liberate Namibia from South African rule. After successfully leading the country to independence in 1990, he became the first president, serving until 2005.
Nujoma had been hospitalized for three weeks prior to his death due to an illness from which he could not recover. President Mbumba expressed deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting how Nujoma inspired a generation of Namibians to embrace their heritage and strive for self-governance. He described him as the "father of the nation," acknowledging a life dedicated to the service of his homeland.
Although he retired from the presidency in 2005, Nujoma remained influential within Swapo, the party he led for 47 years, until stepping down in 2007. Many Namibians are mourning his passing and reflecting on his significant contributions to nation-building and reconciliation.
Vice-President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who is expected to become president in March, praised Nujoma's vision that helped shape a free and united Namibia. International leaders have also paid tribute, with African Union Chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat honoring Nujoma's unwavering commitment to liberation, while South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa remembered him as an extraordinary freedom fighter pivotal to the fight against colonialism.
Kenya's President William Ruto called Nujoma a visionary who dedicated his life to the country's development. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced, but tributes continue to pour in from across Africa and beyond, reflecting an immense legacy left behind by a leader who changed the course of Namibian history.
