Putin's Absence at Turkey Peace Talks Raises Questions
As peace talks loom, President Putin will not attend, leaving a hard-liner to lead the Russian delegation.
In a surprising twist, Russia has released a roster of officials set to attend the anticipated peace talks with Ukraine in Turkey, sparking debate and speculation. Notably absent from the list is President Vladimir V. Putin, further confirming that he will not engage directly with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has previously referred to him as a murderer. The Kremlin has clarified that Putin approved the selection of the delegation, signaling that a hard-line aide will lead it in his stead.
Interestingly, former President Donald Trump, who had shown interest in participating in the talks, announced on Wednesday that he too would miss the meeting. Trump, currently on a tour of the Middle East, indicated plans for a visit to the United Arab Emirates instead, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio would represent the U.S. in Turkey.
“I was thinking about actually flying over there,” Trump had remarked, reflecting on the prospect of attending to advocate for peace. However, he ultimately decided against making the trip. “We’re going to U.A.E. tomorrow. So we have a very full situation. Now that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t do it to save a lot of lives and come back. But, yeah, I’ve been thinking about it,” he stated.
As the international community watches, the absence of both major leaders at the peace talks raises questions about the potential for resolution in the continuing conflict.
