Georgia's Political Crisis Deepens as Outgoing President Rejects Successor's Legitimacy

Outgoing President Salome Zourabichvili disputes Mikheil Kavelashvili's inauguration amid protests and political turmoil in Tbilisi.

In a pivotal moment for Georgia's political landscape, outgoing President Salome Zourabichvili has declared her refusal to leave office despite Mikheil Kavelashvili's inauguration as the new president on Sunday. With mounting dissatisfaction towards the ruling Georgian Dream party, concerns rise over the legitimacy of democratic processes amid street protests and allegations of electoral fraud.

Following Kavelashvili's swearing-in, turmoil erupted in the capital Tbilisi as Zourabichvili asserted her position as the "only legitimate president." Protesters rallied against the new president, highlighting the deep divide within Georgian politics as Kavelashvili aligns himself with a government accused of authoritarianism. Having previously backed Georgia's aspirations to join the European Union, Zourabichvili's condemnation of Kavelashvili's candidacy as illegitimate marks a significant escalation in the political crisis, fueled by protests and international scrutiny.

Zourabichvili's supporters gathered outside the presidential palace as she addressed them, emphasizing that the symbolism of the building was diminished by the presence of her successor. Simultaneously, Kavelashvili took his oath of office amid a closed ceremony amid rising tensions within the parliament, with significant opposition parties boycotting his leadership.

With the Georgian Dream party previously criticizing NATO and the European Union, and recent announcements delaying EU accession talks until 2028, public protests have intensified, reflecting a strong desire among citizens for closer ties with the West.

As USA imposes sanctions against key figures within the ruling party, the situation continues to unfold, leaving Georgia's future political stability in question.

Georgia, embroiled in a socio-political crisis, must grapple with its national identity and international aspirations amidst growing discontent among citizens.
