According to the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office, one individual accompanying Payne has been charged with abandonment leading to death, along with drug-related offenses. A hotel employee and another person have also been charged with drug supply activities, yet none of the suspects have been publicly identified.

The investigation revealed that emergency services received reports of an intoxicated guest trashing his hotel room prior to the fall. Upon arrival, police discovered multiple substances, including cocaine, alcohol, and a prescription antidepressant, in Payne’s accommodation. A forensic investigation concluded that his death was a result of "multiple trauma" and significant hemorrhaging, corroborating with a toxicology report suggesting he may have been incapacitated at the time of the fall, negating the likelihood of voluntary action.

Argentinian law enforcement has undertaken multiple searches of residences in Buenos Aires and scrutinized over 800 hours of surveillance footage to piece together events leading up to the incident. Medical examinations have also been conducted regarding Payne's personal items, including a damaged laptop.

The formal release of Payne’s body to his family for repatriation to the UK occurred shortly after the investigation commenced.
