Israel Intensifies Military Action as Pressure Mounts on Hamas for Hostage Release
Israel's defense minister warns of escalated attacks in Gaza unless more hostages are freed from Hamas.
The Israeli defense minister emphasized on Friday the nation's intention to escalate military operations against Hamas if the Palestinian group does not accede to demands for the release of more hostages. Israel Katz declared that the armed forces were ready to expand their territorial control in Gaza and intensify assaults from land, air, and sea. This declaration follows the revocation of a cease-fire that had held for over two months, resulting in Israeli bombardments and limited ground incursions that reportedly led to over 500 Palestinian deaths, as reported by the Gaza health ministry, which does not differentiate between civilian and militant casualties.
“The more Hamas delays releasing hostages, the more it will lose,” Katz said, reinforcing the urgency of the situation. Although there were reports of limited Israeli operations without significant casualties in Gaza today, mediators are attempting to avert a possible escalation into all-out conflict. Discussions for returning to the previous cease-fire, initiated in mid-January, are ongoing according to Hamas, although they contend that any agreement for hostages must conclusively end the war—something Israel is reluctant to commit to while Hamas retains power in Gaza.
In the previous three days, Israeli forces have targeted various sites in Gaza, asserting their objective was to strike at Hamas personnel and resources. Israeli troops have also taken control of a significant corridor in central Gaza, a strategic location from which they previously withdrew during the cease-fire, and have broadened ground operations in both northern and southern regions of the enclave.
