Celebrated Malian Filmmaker Souleymane Cissé Passes Away at 84

Influential director and advocate for African cinema, Souleymane Cissé, is remembered for his groundbreaking achievements and dedication to the film industry.


Renowned Malian filmmaker Souleymane Cissé, noted for winning the Jury Prize at Cannes, passed away in Bamako at the age of 84. He played a significant role in elevating African cinema and had recently participated in a press conference for the upcoming Fespaco festival.

 

Souleymane Cissé, an acclaimed filmmaker from Mali, has died at the age of 84. His passing on Wednesday in Bamako was confirmed by friend and French film producer François Margolin. Cissé was a prominent figure in promoting African cinema and became the first Black African director to win the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival with his 1987 film "Yeelen" ("Light").

Cissé participated in a press conference just hours before his death to award two prizes ahead of the Pan-African Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou, where he was set to lead the jury. Margolin noted Cissé was in high spirits during the briefing, interacting playfully before retiring for a nap, from which he never awoke.

Throughout his illustrious 50-year career, Cissé garnered numerous accolades, including a nomination for Best Foreign Film at the 1989 Spirit Awards. The film "Yeelen" was praised by director Martin Scorsese as a monumental cinematic experience, securing Cissé’s legacy as a pioneer in filmmaking.

Until his final days, Cissé remained active, continuing to work and travel globally. His contributions to the world of cinema, particularly in highlighting African narratives, will be celebrated and remembered.
