Ukraine's Chief Army Psychiatrist Arrested on Corruption Charges Amid Ongoing Anti-Corruption Drive
The chief psychiatrist of Ukraine's army faces serious allegations of corruption, including illegal enrichment of over $1 million amid the ongoing war with Russia.
Ukraine's Chief Army Psychiatrist, Oleh Druz, has been arrested following accusations of "illegal enrichment" amounting to over $1 million since the onset of Russia's invasion in February 2022. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) undertook the investigation and revealed substantial undisclosed assets, including three apartments in Kyiv and Odesa, two parcels of land, and a fleet of luxurious BMW vehicles.
During a search of Druz's residence, authorities recovered approximately $152,000 (£124,000) in cash along with €34,000, suggesting significant financial misreporting. Allegations further indicate that the wealth, registered under his wife, daughter, sons, and other associates, was not declared, contradicting legal requirements.
Facing a maximum penalty of ten years in prison, Druz's past is also marred by controversy; he was previously implicated in a 2017 case regarding undeclared SUVs and properties, an incident that led to his suspension.
This arrest underscores Ukraine's ongoing struggle against rampant corruption, particularly within military circles. In recent months, the country has seen a series of anti-corruption actions, including the jailing of a Ukrainian MP for embezzlement and the dismissal of over 30 conscription officials tied to bribery and human smuggling schemes.
Additionally, Ukraine's parliament has moved to abolish military medical commissions, responding to widespread reports of corruption involving military service exemptions. As the nation grapples with external threats, it appears equally committed to combating internal corruption.
