Israeli Airstrikes Hit Yemeni Capital's Airport Following Houthi Missile Attack
Israel retaliates against Houthi militia, escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Israeli fighter jets executed a bombing raid on the primary international airport in Sana, Yemen, on Tuesday, according to officials from the Israeli military. This action was taken just two days after the Iran-backed Houthi militia launched a ballistic missile that narrowly missed Israel’s main airport, injuring at least six people.
The Israeli military's assault is part of an ongoing skirmish with the Houthis, who control Sana and several regions in northwestern Yemen. The militia claims their missile attacks are in solidarity with Palestinians, aiming to prompt an end to the Gaza conflict.
Details regarding the extent of damages at Sana’s airport remain unclear; however, the airport serves as a vital link for over 20 million Yemenis in Houthi-dominated areas to the international community. Prior to the airstrike, the Israeli military warned the public via social media to evacuate the vicinity of the airport.
The previous Sunday saw a Houthi ballistic missile breach Israel's air defenses and hit near Tel Aviv's Ben-Gurion International Airport, prompting multiple airlines to cancel their flights in the aftermath. Israeli officials condemned the missile strike, which led to injuries, and promised retaliation.
In the wake of this event, Israeli jets targeted the port of Hudaydah in Houthi-controlled northwestern Yemen and a concrete factory located east of the city. Reports indicate at least four fatalities and more than 30 injuries from these strikes, as reported by the Houthi-aligned health ministry.
Following the escalation, the Houthis announced an "air blockade" on Israel, committing to further attacks on Israeli airports, thereby intensifying the already fraught circumstances in the region.
