British Police Detain Iranian Nationals Amid Counterterrorism Operations
Eight arrests made, including seven Iranian nationals, linked to suspected terrorist plots in London.
British counterterrorism officials have apprehended eight men, including seven Iranian nationals, amid ongoing investigations into potential terrorist activities, as reported by London’s Metropolitan Police on Sunday. On Saturday, four Iranians alongside an unidentified individual were arrested on suspicions of plotting a terrorist act directed at a particular location, which police chose not to disclose for operational security reasons.
Dominic Murphy, head of the Counter Terrorism Command at the Metropolitan Police, described the inquiry as "fast-moving," emphasizing the close collaboration with the site at risk to ensure their safety and awareness. He noted that the investigation is still nascent, with numerous avenues of inquiry being pursued to uncover the motivations behind the suspected plot, while assessing any imminent risks to the public.
The arrested Iranian nationals, aged 29, 29, 40, and 46, were taken into custody across various locations including London, Swindon, Stockport, and Rochdale, while the other individual was seized in the Manchester area. Additionally, three other Iranian men, aged 39, 44, and 55, were detained separately in London under the National Security Act 2023, which aims to bolster defenses against hostile acts targeting Britain.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper characterized the arrests as critical, highlighting the necessity for ongoing adjustments in national security responses to emerging threats. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to assisting police and intelligence services to ensure public safety.
Further details regarding the specific nature of the investigations remain undisclosed, but last year's remarks by Ken McCallum, head of MI5, identified Iran as an increasing concern for UK counterterrorism efforts, noting that 20 plots linked to Iranian interests have emerged since January 2022—each posing severe risks to British citizens.
On Sunday, Health Secretary Wes Streeting informed BBC viewers that they would receive updates as circumstances allowed, underscoring the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigations.
