Sudan's Civil War Escalates: Paramilitaries Strike Civilian Areas
Recent drone attacks in Port Sudan highlight rising tensions and civilian impacts amid ongoing conflict.
Sudanese paramilitary forces have escalated their offensive by targeting civilian infrastructures, including an airport and various facilities in the eastern coastal city of Port Sudan, causing alarm within the already embattled nation. The strikes occurred early on Sunday, reportedly resulting in “scattered explosions,” according to statements made by a spokesperson for the Sudanese military.
Brig. Gen. Nabil Abdullah described the assailants as “the enemy,” referencing the paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (R.S.F.). He reported that the attack involved the use of exploding drones, although military antiaircraft systems managed to intercept several of them. The military confirmed that the attack resulted in limited damage, notably damaging an ammunition depot at Osman Digna Air Base and causing a series of minor explosions.
Port Sudan International Airport, joint-use military and civilian facility, temporarily halted operations due to the attacks. The Sudanese Civil Aviation Authority condemned the strike as a “treacherous attack” on the air base by rebel militias. Later, the airport announced that regular operations had resumed after security checks were completed.
This incident marks the first significant assault on Port Sudan since the onset of Sudan’s civil war in 2023, which has resulted in widespread displacement and humanitarian issues. The R.S.F. has yet to release any statements regarding the recent attacks, further complicating the narrative of the ongoing conflict in the area.
