Sydney Sweeney Critiques Perceived Female Solidarity in Hollywood
The actress challenges the authenticity of women's support in the film industry during a revealing Vanity Fair interview.
In a candid interview with Vanity Fair, Sydney Sweeney, the star of "Anyone But You," recently voiced her concerns about the supposed female empowerment narrative within Hollywood, calling it "fake." Despite a successful career, highlighted by her rom-com that grossed $220 million at the box office, Sweeney articulated frustrations with the industry's treatment of women.
She remarked, "This entire industry, all people say is 'women empowering other women.' None of it's happening. All of it is fake and a front for all the other [stuff] that they say behind everyone’s back." Earlier this year, Sweeney publicly addressed disparaging remarks from Carol Baum, a Hollywood producer, who criticized her appearance and talent after viewing "Anyone But You." Baum articulated her discomfort, questioning Sweeney's appeal and making harsh judgments about her acting abilities.
Reflecting on the incident, Sweeney stated, "It’s very disheartening to see women tear other women down, especially when women who are successful in other avenues of their industry see younger talent working really hard…" She highlighted the deeply rooted issue of competition among women, noting a generational history that fosters the belief that only one woman can succeed at a time. "I’ve read that our entire lives, we were raised to believe only one woman can be at the top... So then all the others feel like they have to fight each other…" said Sweeney, emphasizing the need for collaboration over conflict.
Sweeney further expressed her struggle to understand why she is targeted, stating, "I'm still trying to figure it out. I’m just trying my best over here. Why am I getting attacked?" As the industry continues to grapple with issues of representation and solidarity, Sweeney's reflections serve as a call for genuine support among women in film and television.
Baum's disparaging comments were met with a response from Sweeney's representative, who lamented, "How sad that a woman in the position to share her expertise and experience chooses instead to attack another woman." Sweeney's experiences reveal the complexities of navigating success in an industry that often pits women against one another, highlighting the pressing need for authentic solidarity among female artists.
