Jimmy Lai Stands Firm Against Foreign Collusion Accusations in High-Stakes Trial
The pro-democracy figure and Apple Daily founder firmly denies allegations of international collaboration during a pivotal court session.
Jimmy Lai, a prominent pro-democracy advocate in Hong Kong and founder of the now-defunct Apple Daily tabloid, testified in court for the first time during his national security trial, which could result in a life sentence. At 76, Lai faces accusations of colluding with foreign entities but emphatically stated that he has "never" utilized his connections—including notable figures like former US Vice President Mike Pence and ex-Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen—to sway foreign policy regarding Hong Kong.
Currently serving time for previous pro-democracy protest-related charges stemming from 2019, Lai's hearing came just a day after the sentencing of 45 fellow campaigners from the Hong Kong 47 group. Despite the gravity of his situation, Lai appeared in good spirits, acknowledging supporters outside the courtroom.
When questioned about his foreign engagements, particularly regarding meetings with high-ranking US officials, Lai refuted any claims of influencing policy, emphasizing that his discussions were focused on sharing the situation in Hong Kong. For instance, he clarified that in his interaction with Pence, he merely conveyed the local conditions when prompted. Regarding former Secretary of State Pompeo, Lai stated he advocated for verbal support for Hong Kong rather than any specific action.
Multiple activists, lawmakers, and participants in the pro-democracy movement have been detained under the National Security Law (NSL) implemented by Beijing, which the Chinese government purports was essential in addressing the unrest that erupted in 2019. In contrast, critics argue that the NSL is a tool for China’s intensified control over the territory. During a press briefing, China's foreign ministry spokesman labeled Lai as a key figure orchestrating disturbances against China.
Lai has pleaded not guilty to charges of colluding with foreign forces and a count tied to his newspaper, which has faced allegations of sedition. He defended Apple Daily's core values—encompassing freedom of speech, democracy, and rule of law—while firmly opposing acts of violence. These principles, he claimed, resonate deeply with the people of Hong Kong.
The prosecution of Lai, who holds British citizenship, has drawn international attention, prompting calls from human rights organizations and foreign officials for his release. Former US President Donald Trump expressed strong support for Lai, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has recently raised concerns regarding his health during engagements with Chinese officials.
Lai’s health has become a focal point of concern, as his family and legal representatives have noted detrimental changes, including weight loss and frailty observed in his recent court appearances. Previously sentenced on charges involving unauthorized assembly and fraud, Lai has been subjected to solitary confinement since late 2020, further intensifying the urgency surrounding his case.
