A stunning incident occurs at China's famous Drum Tower as its roof collapses, narrowly missing visitors.


A centuries-old tower in Anhui Province has sustained serious damage as a section of its roof fell, prompting an investigation into the repairs.



In a startling incident on Monday evening at approximately 18:30 local time (11:30 BST), hundreds of tiles from the historic Drum Tower in Fengyang County, Anhui Province, came crashing down, nearly striking visitors present at the site. Eyewitnesses captured the dramatic moment, highlighting the imminent danger faced by those nearby. Fortunately, local media reported that no injuries were sustained during the collapse.

The Drum Tower, recognized as the largest in China, was originally built in 1375 during the Ming Dynasty and underwent significant renovations in 1995. Following the mishap, officials from the Fengyang County Culture and Tourism Bureau committed to conducting a thorough investigation into the incident and the quality of the recent repairs.

Fengyang County, located approximately 200 miles from Beijing, is historically significant as the birthplace of Zhu Yuanzhang, the Hongwu Emperor and founder of the Ming Dynasty. In response to the incident, local authorities swiftly evacuated bystanders, securing the area to prevent further accidents.

According to statements from the county, the investigation will evaluate the design and construction of the repair project to identify any potential shortcomings. Additionally, experts have been called in to support the evaluation process at the site. The historic tower has been closed to the public while repairs are underway, and updates on its reopening will be provided in the near future.
