Israeli Forces Kill 23 Palestinians Amid Aid Distribution Chaos in Gaza
Violence erupts as aid distribution efforts in Gaza lead to deadly conflict, raising humanitarian concerns.
Israeli forces reportedly killed 23 Palestinians during a violent confrontation near an aid distribution center in central Gaza, according to witnesses and medical personnel. The incident unfolded as thousands attempted to receive aid from the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a U.S. and Israeli-backed organization. Witnesses claim that tanks and drones targeted the crowds, escalating tensions further.
Medics at al-Awda hospital in Nuseirat confirmed that not only were 23 bodies brought in, but also over 100 individuals suffered injuries. The Hamas-run health ministry has reported that more than 400 Palestinians have died in similar occurrences since late May, coinciding with the GHF's takeover of aid distribution in a move aimed at bypassing the UN.
Following a three-month blockade where no supplies entered Gaza, the humanitarian situation has rapidly deteriorated, with claims of famine conditions threatening the population's survival, according to UN assessments. While witnesses assert that Israeli troops initiated the shootings, there have been reports of armed local individuals also firing in the vicinity.
Just a day ago, on Thursday, at least 12 Palestinians were killed while awaiting aid, and the GHF continued to deny incidents occurring near its facility. The Israeli military, on the other hand, stated that soldiers fired warning shots after suspect gatherings near Netzarim, denying awareness of any injuries.
Further violence erupted as Israeli forces shelled an area east of Khan Younis, where thousands convened for flour distributed by the World Food Programme (WFP). This incident resulted in the loss of over 50 lives, with Israeli forces declaring the situation is under investigation.
In another airstrike incident, a medic reported that 11 Palestinians were killed in an Israeli attack on a residential home in the al-Ma'sar neighborhood. Eyewitnesses recounted strikes targeting civilians, with reports suggesting that renewed air operations may be increasingly focused on Hamas elements as they attempt to regain control amid rising disorder.
These escalations come amidst Israel's ongoing offensive following Hamas's attacks on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and a significant number of hostages. As a result, the Hamas-run health ministry claims over 55,706 fatalities have been recorded in Gaza, including more than 15,000 children.
