Turkey's First Lady, Emine Erdogan, has reached out to former U.S. First Lady Melania Trump, imploring her to raise her voice for the children suffering in Gaza amid the ongoing war. In a letter published by the Turkish presidency, Mrs. Erdogan commends Trump's previous advocacy for children affected by the war in Ukraine, urging her to extend similar support to the Palestinian children facing dire conditions in Gaza.
Erdogan described the Gaza situation as a "children's cemetery," expressing her distress over the humanitarian catastrophe that has enveloped the region. Citing alarming statistics from UN-backed food security assessments, she noted that around half a million people are currently suffering from extreme food shortages in Gaza, with 132,000 children facing severe malnutrition. "The phrase 'unknown baby' written on the shrouds of thousands of Gazan children opens irreparable wounds in our consciences,” she claimed.
Mrs. Erdogan's letter not only calls on Melania Trump to demonstrate the same sensitivity toward Palestinian children as she has shown to Ukrainian ones but also encourages her to reach out to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to put an end to the humanitarian crisis. Notably, Emine Erdogan usually focuses on non-political matters, such as environmental advocacy, but has previously written to world leaders' spouses about humanitarian issues.
The Turkish First Lady's message comes as a new report from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) reveals severe famine conditions in Gaza, forecasting that over 640,000 people could face catastrophic situations by the end of September. The IPC report indicated that approximately one in three children in Gaza are acutely malnourished, and the toll of these conditions is heartbreaking — with the Hamas-run health ministry reporting that 112 out of 273 malnutrition-related deaths have been children.
While Israel disputes the existence of famine in Gaza and claims biases in the IPC's evaluation, the report highlights the deteriorating conditions in the area that have preceded a planned new military offensive by Israel, sparked by a previous Hamas-led assault on southern Israel.
