Zelensky Accuses China of Sending Fighters to Support Russia in Ukraine Conflict
Ukrainian President raises alarm over reported Chinese involvement in the war, highlighting captured soldiers.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has made serious allegations regarding the involvement of Chinese citizens in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, stating that at least 155 Chinese nationals are fighting alongside Russian forces. This statement follows the capture of two Chinese fighters, marking Kyiv's first official assertion that China is providing manpower to Russia.
In a press briefing, Zelensky emphasized that there are potentially "many more" Chinese individuals engaged in the conflict, referencing intelligence obtained by his administration. China's government has historically dismissed such claims, categorizing them as unfounded. Nevertheless, as of now, Beijing has not responded to Zelensky’s specific allegations.
During the same news conference, Lin Jian, a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, announced that officials are in the process of "verifying the relevant situation with Ukraine". He emphasized that the Chinese government consistently advises its citizens to steer clear of armed conflicts and to refrain from participating in any military operations.
Zelensky reiterated the gravity of the situation, noting, "the Chinese issue is serious," and providing additional details regarding the 155 Chinese individuals, including their names and passport information. He indicated that Russian forces are utilizing social media to recruit Chinese fighters, asserting that the Chinese government is aware of these activities.
According to Zelensky, the alleged recruits receive training in Moscow before being dispatched to Ukraine, accompanied by migration documents and compensation. Earlier in the week, he reported instances of fighting involving six Chinese soldiers in the Donetsk region of Ukraine, with two taken as prisoners. Meanwhile, Russia has not commented on the situation.
Zelensky warned that the inclusion of China, among other countries, into the conflict by Russia signals President Putin's intention to prolong the war rather than seeking a resolution. The United States has characterized these reports as "disturbing", highlighting Ukraine's skepticism towards China's purported neutrality in the matter.
Previously, Zelensky accused China of supplying components that contribute to Russia's military capabilities and urged Beijing to adopt a more consistent diplomatic stance. The U.S. has also raised concerns regarding China's support in enhancing Russian warfare capabilities.
While China maintains close ties with Russia, it has sought to project itself as a neutral entity in the conflict, reiterating its position of not providing lethal weaponry and managing the export of dual-use commodities in compliance with regulations. The latest allegations of Chinese operatives in the Ukraine war closely follow Ukraine's recent capture of two North Korean soldiers within Russian territory.
