On June 1, the Madleen set sail from Sicily under the Freedom Flotilla Coalition's banner, seeking to break the longstanding blockade on Gaza that has persisted for nearly two decades. Israel's military had previously warned of serious repercussions for any endeavors attempting to reach the enclave, pledging to utilize all necessary means to enforce its naval blockade.

Following the interception, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition labeled the incident as a “kidnapping” of its activists by Israeli forces. The ship is reported to have carried approximately a dozen individuals on board who were aiming to deliver vital aid to the Gazan population.

Early on Monday, surveillance footage emerged depicting the Madleen's crew and passengers donned in orange life vests as another vessel approached. Eyewitness accounts share that moments later, Israeli operatives boarded the humanitarian ship.

Israel has confirmed plans to return the crew and passengers to their respective home countries following the incident, which has sparked widespread criticism and discussion in the global community regarding the legality and morality of the blockade of Gaza. Advocates continue to spotlight the urgent needs facing Gazans amidst ongoing tensions in the region.
