Russian President expresses willingness to negotiate with the U.S. President-elect on ending the war in Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed a strong desire to engage in dialogue with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, following Trump's commitment during his victorious 2024 campaign to promptly negotiate a conclusion to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. During his annual end-of-year press conference on Thursday, Putin stated he is open to discussions whenever Trump is ready, noting their lengthy silence over the past four years. “I don’t know when I’m going to see him. He isn’t saying anything about it. I haven’t talked to him in more than four years. I am ready for it, of course. Any time,” he asserted, conveying optimism about a potential meeting.
Putin specifically referenced Trump’s promises regarding the war in Ukraine and showcased his readiness for negotiations, aiming to uncover compromises. Despite recent challenges on the battlefield and turbulence in the Middle East, Putin asserted the resilience of Russia, rejecting narratives that suggest his negotiating power is diminished. “You said that this conversation will take place in a situation when I am in some weakened state,” he replied to an NBC News reporter. “And you, and those people who pay your salaries in the US, would very much like Russia to be in a weakened position.” He claimed that over the years, Russia has become more robust, emphasizing a self-reliant image.
Additionally, Putin turned his attention to Russia's involvement in Syria amid evolving political dynamics following the Assad regime's decline. He asserted that a significant portion of the Syrian populace continues to favor Russia's military presence while reframing the narrative regarding Russian military bases in the region. “We’ll need to decide for ourselves how our relationships will look with those political forces that now control and will control the situation in the country in the future. Our interests need to coincide,” he elaborated.
Notably, Putin indicated he would pursue information on the condition of American journalist Austin Tice, abducted in Damascus in 2012—a rare public comment on this case. When discussing Ukraine, he claimed success in achieving the strategic objectives of what he referred to as Russia’s “special military operation,” despite ongoing conflicts. “We are moving towards resolving the primary aims that we set at the start of the special military operation,” Putin remarked. “Our guys are fighting heroically. The capabilities of the armed forces are growing.”
The potential for a meeting between Trump and Putin heralds a pivotal moment in redefining U.S.-Russia relations. With Putin advocating for Russian sovereignty and strength while Trump appears committed to diplomacy, the forthcoming months may ultimately shape whether their interactions foster greater global unity or deepen divisions.
