Container Ship Crashes into Norwegian Garden, Leaving Homeowner in Shock
A bizarre morning in Norway as a giant cargo vessel unexpectedly lands in a resident's front yard.
A man in Byneset, Norway, had an unforgettable start to his day when he discovered a massive cargo ship had come to rest in his front yard after running aground. The incident occurred early on Thursday at around 05:00 local time (03:00 GMT), unnerving resident Johan Helberg, whose home was narrowly spared from impact.
Mr. Helberg was alerted to the unexpected visitor by his concerned neighbor, Jostein Jorgensen, who witnessed the ship barreling toward the shoreline. “The doorbell rang at a time of day when I don’t like to open,” Helberg recounted in an interview. Upon peering out the window, he was met with the imposing sight. “I had to bend my neck to see the top of it. It was so unreal,” he expressed.
Jorgensen, who described being stirred awake by the ship's approach, was astonished to find Helberg still inside. “I was sure that he was already outside, but no, there was no sign of life,” said Jorgensen, who ultimately had to call Helberg to get a response.
The Cypriot-registered cargo ship, named NCL Salten, was on a southwest course through the Trondheim Fjord, bound for Orkanger with 16 crew members aboard. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and authorities confirmed that an investigation into the crash is underway to determine its cause.
In light of his unusual new "neighbor," Mr. Helberg humorously noted, “It's a very bulky new neighbor, but it will soon go away.” This incident isn't the ship’s first issue, as reports indicate it had previously run aground earlier in 2023 but had managed to dislodge itself at that time.
