Priest Dismissed Amid Controversy over Music Video Filming in Church

A New York priest faces dismissal after allowing Sabrina Carpenter to film provocative scenes in his church, leading to allegations of mismanagement and violations of diocesan policies.

Monsignor Jamie Gigantiello has been relieved of his pastoral duties after an investigation revealed serious misconduct, including the controversial filming of a music video by Sabrina Carpenter in a Brooklyn church.

In a significant move, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn has removed Monsignor Jamie Gigantiello from his position following an investigation into his management practices, which came under scrutiny after pop star Sabrina Carpenter filmed a provocative music video in his church. The release of Carpenter's "Feather," filmed at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, triggered backlash over scenes deemed inappropriate, including imagery of a crucifix featuring profanity and Carpenter dancing on the church altar in revealing attire.

The diocese's investigation revealed not only issues related to the music video but also serious breaches of diocesan policies. Bishop Robert Brennan stated, "Investigations conducted by Alvarez & Marsal and Sullivan & Cromwell LLP have uncovered evidence of serious violations of Diocesan policies and protocols," which deeply concerned church officials.

Gigantiello's administrative powers had been stripped in November 2023, shortly after public outcry regarding the music video. He was also removed from his fundraising role as the vicar of development for the diocese due to accusations of misconduct, including unauthorized financial transfers and personal expenses charged to the church.

The inquiries unearthed troubling financial activities involving Gigantiello, including the transfer of nearly $2 million in church funds to bank accounts tied to a former staff member of New York City Mayor Eric Adams. This comes in the wake of multiple criminal charges against Adams, including bribery and fraud, prompting a closer look into his administration.

Despite acknowledging his lapse in judgment in a letter to parishioners regarding the filming, Gigantiello has chosen not to address the multitude of allegations leading to his dismissal. The diocese has appointed a replacement amid this unfolding scandal, marking a significant shift in leadership within the parish.
