Leaders pledge to elevate bilateral relations amid external pressures.
In a strategic move following Donald Trump's inauguration, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a one-and-a-half hour video call, reaffirming their commitment to deepen bilateral ties despite external pressures. Putin affectionately referred to Xi as a "dear friend," emphasizing that their relationship is built on a foundation of friendship, mutual trust, and support.
Amidst rising tensions, particularly with the United States, Xi urged continued strengthening of strategic coordination between the two nations to safeguard their legitimate interests. Trump had recently threatened tariffs on China, labeling it as an "abuser," while also indicating that Russia would face complications if it did not negotiate a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
In response, Putin reiterated that any settlement regarding Ukraine needs to consider "Russian interests," as reported by Yuri Ushakov, an adviser on foreign affairs. There's been speculation that China is aiding Russia's military efforts, providing essential components amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine. The trade relationship between the two countries has blossomed, reaching a historic $240 billion in 2023—a 64% increase since before the invasion.
Both leaders expressed readiness to build a working relationship with the U.S. based on mutual respect and benefits, contingent on interest from Trump’s administration. Ushakov clarified that their conversation did not directly reference Trump’s recent inauguration.
During the discussion, geopolitical issues concerning the Middle East, South Korea, and Taiwan were also addressed, with Xi emphasizing his openness to collaboration in light of "external uncertainties." Prior to their call, Xi had spoken with Trump, who described their conversation as "very good," covering topics such as trade and social media platforms. Although Putin has yet to personally communicate with Trump, he offered congratulations via state television shortly before the inauguration.
