K-Pop's Big Ocean: Breaking Barriers Through Sign Language
Big Ocean, a revolutionary K-Pop band with deaf and hard-of-hearing members, captivates fans through their unique performances integrating sign language.
The rise of Big Ocean, a distinctive K-Pop boy band, is reshaping perceptions of music as they blend singing, rapping, and dance with the art of sign language. Comprised of Lee Chan-yeon (27), Park Hyun-jin (25), and Kim Ji-seok (22)—all of whom are deaf or hard of hearing—the group has captured the hearts of fans not just with catchy tunes but also through their innovative use of Korean Sign Language (KSL).
Their journey began on Korea’s Day of People with Disabilities in 2024 with the release of their debut single “Glow,” which immediately resonated with listeners and created a cultural ripple effect beyond national borders. The group further showcased its talents when they released their follow-up single “Blow,” featuring lyrics primarily in English and incorporating American Sign Language.
Their unique artistry was recognized in September when Big Ocean was crowned Billboard’s rookies of the month. They were also celebrated on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia Entertainment & Sports List for their groundbreaking impact. The band has recently toured internationally, performing at events such as an anime festival in Brazil and a United Nations tech event in Switzerland, with an anticipated first American tour underway at the end of July.
Connecting deeply with their fan base, affectionately dubbed “Pados,” meaning waves in Korean, the trio has captivated a growing audience with nearly a million Instagram followers and hundreds of thousands on TikTok. The band has inspired many within their community to learn sign language and host tutorial sessions, further emphasizing their commitment to inclusivity and creativity in the music industry. As Big Ocean pushes boundaries, they prove that music transcends sound, ensuring their voice resonates in a world hungry for representation.
