Sierra Leone Recalls Ambassador Amid Cocaine Scandal at Embassy
Seven suitcases of suspected cocaine found in a Sierra Leone embassy vehicle prompt diplomatic response and investigations.
Sierra Leone has taken swift action following a serious incident involving its embassy in Guinea, where seven suitcases suspected of containing cocaine were found during a police search of an embassy vehicle. On Monday, authorities in Guinea seized the vehicle, detaining those inside for questioning about the illicit substances. In response, Sierra Leone's Foreign Minister, Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba, announced the urgent recall of the country's ambassador to Guinea, Mr. Alimamy Bangura, who was not present in the vehicle and is not under arrest.
Minister Kabba emphasized the need for a thorough investigation, stating that there has been no evidence linking the ambassador to the trafficking. Alongside the suitcases, approximately $2,000 in cash was also recovered, although the exact weight of the suspected drugs remains unspecified. Both Sierra Leone and Guinea are actively collaborating to ensure a comprehensive investigation into the matter, reinforcing that any parties involved with violating drug trafficking laws will face severe consequences.
The incident sheds light on West Africa's ongoing struggles with drug trafficking, particularly with cocaine transit from Latin America destined for European markets. Sierra Leone's President Julius Maada Bio previously declared a national emergency regarding drug abuse, particularly highlighting issues with "kush," a locally prevalent psychoactive substance. Community leaders have urged the government to take decisive action against drug-related issues, underscoring the urgent need for supportive measures for affected individuals.
