Israel's Wildfire Crisis: A Second Day of Battle Near Jerusalem
Firefighters race against the clock to combat wildfires, as changing winds threaten to reignite the flames amid Independence Day celebrations.
Firefighters in Israel are engaged in a fierce battle against wildfires that have engulfed areas on the outskirts of Jerusalem for a second consecutive day. With an increase in winds anticipated on Thursday, they are striving to contain some of the most severe blazes seen in recent years. As emergency services make strides to control the fire, officials reopened one of the main highways connecting Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, allowing evacuees from both Israel and the Israeli-occupied West Bank to return to their homes, which had been disrupted as Independence Day celebrations commenced.
Despite progress, the fire has not been fully extinguished, with officials warning that gusts could resurrect the flames. “We’re doing everything we can to finish in the coming hours because the wind gusts can bring us back to where we started,” cautioned Tal Volvovitch, a spokeswoman for Israel’s fire and rescue service.
While the precise cause of the fires is still under investigation, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed that 18 individuals have been detained on suspicion of arson, with one reportedly caught in the act. Earlier, he had pointed to a combination of fierce winds, dry conditions, and open terrain filled with shrubbery as factors exacerbating the situation. In an alarming development, police also arrested a 19-year-old from a Palestinian neighborhood in East Jerusalem who allegedly expressed support for the fires on social media.
In response to the escalating crisis, firefighting aircraft from Croatia, Italy, and Cyprus are set to join the struggle, enhancing local resources. The Palestinian Authority has also offered assistance, though Israeli officials have indicated their firefighters will not be joining the efforts. Historically, there has been cooperation between Israeli and Palestinian forces during such crises, as seen in 2021 when Palestinian firefighters contributed to similar firefighting initiatives.
As part of the preventive measures, Israel’s fire and rescue service has banned the lighting of open fires until May 7; however, designated areas for barbecues during Independence Day festivities remain available. This is a popular tradition among Israelis who typically enjoy outdoor celebrations during the holiday marking the founding of the nation.
