British Prime Minister confronts misinformation regarding child abuse scandals amidst public health event.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer of the United Kingdom took a strong stand against misinformation propagated on social media by Elon Musk, without naming him directly during a visit to Epsom Hospital on January 6, 2025. Starmer criticized the billionaire's claims regarding child sex abuse scandals, asserting that perpetuating falsehoods does not serve victims, but rather fuels personal agendas.
"Those who are spreading lies and misinformation, as far and as wide as possible, are not interested in victims," Starmer stated firmly. "They’re interested in themselves," he added, emphasizing the detrimental impact of such rhetoric.
Musk had suggested that Starmer was slow to respond to the widespread abuses of young girls, citing the notorious case from the northern town of Rotherham, where grooming gangs exploited approximately 1,400 girls. In response, Starmer highlighted his tenure as director of the Crown Prosecution Service from 2008 to 2013, during which he initiated legal actions against Asian grooming gangs and established new protocols for reporting child sex offenses.
“There’s nothing secret about being director of public prosecutions," Starmer mentioned, underlining transparency in his prosecution record. "Every single case I prosecuted went to court, was looked at by a judge."
The confrontation escalated as Musk reiterated accusations that Starmer had attempted to conceal the abuse cases. He also took aim at Jess Phillips, the Labour government’s under secretary for safeguarding, referring to her as a “rape genocide apologist” for opposing a national inquiry into child sexual exploitation in nearby Oldham.
Starmer's response reflects a commitment to navigating complex social issues with factual information and support for victims of abuse, pushing back against what he calls harmful misinformation from influential figures like Musk.
