Tourists wishing to cross from Thailand into Cambodia will now be denied entry at various checkpoints due to intensified restrictions. The military announced this decision on Monday, indicating it was a response to the "current security situation." This ban notably impacts not only vehicles and individuals but also foreign travelers arriving by air into Siem Reap, an essential tourist destination.

The bilateral relations between Thailand and Cambodia have plummeted to their lowest point in recent years, particularly following deadly armed confrontations along the border in May, resulting in the death of a Cambodian soldier. The diplomatic fallout has led to retaliatory measures from both sides, with Cambodia enacting a ban on Thai imports, encompassing agricultural goods, electricity, and even cultural media.

While the travel ban is comprehensive, exceptions may be made on humanitarian bases, allowing students or medical patients to navigate the restrictions, subject to the discretion of checkpoint officials. Additionally, the military reasoned that the restrictions could aid in combating illegal scam operations that have proliferated within Cambodia.
