Three Sentenced for Murder of Swedish Hip-Hop Artist C Gambino Amid Rising Gang Violence
Long prison sentences handed to three men for their involvement in the fatal shooting of celebrated hip-hop artist C Gambino in Gothenburg, highlighting the ongoing issues of gang-related violence in Sweden.
In a shocking case that has captured national attention, three men in their twenties have been sentenced to significant prison terms for their involvement in the murder of the acclaimed Swedish hip-hop artist C Gambino, also known as Karar Ramadan. The incident occurred in June 2024, within a multi-storey car park in Gothenburg, where the 26-year-old artist was fatally shot in what prosecutors described as a "ruthless and premeditated" attack.
C Gambino had recently been awarded the title of 2023's hip-hop artist at Sweden's prestigious Grammis music awards, making his death all the more impactful within the cultural landscape. The men were found guilty of aiding and abetting murder; however, two were acquitted of the actual shooting due to insufficient evidence regarding who fired the fatal bullet. The weapon involved in the incident has yet to be discovered, as has the vehicle utilized for the attack, which was later found incinerated.
The court pointed to a potential connection to ongoing gang conflicts within the city, despite finding no direct evidence linking C Gambino to any criminal enterprises. Sweden has faced increasing challenges with gang-related violence over the last few years, resulting in numerous fatalities and targeting youth for illicit activities.
During the shooters' trial, investigators utilized hours of CCTV footage alongside mobile phone data to reconstruct the events leading up to the murder. The footage revealed the attackers had been surveilling the parking facility for an extended period before C Gambino returned from the gym. Emergency services, upon arrival, reportedly encountered communication issues, further complicating the critical immediate response to the scene. The artist succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.
At the conclusion of the trial, a 22-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment, while his accomplices, aged 21 and 20, received sentences of 15 and a half years and 12 and a half years, respectively. In a related case in southern Sweden, a 14-year-old boy was found guilty of a gang-ordered murder, although he, along with two other underage accomplices, will not face any imprisonment due to their young age under Swedish law.
Meanwhile, police in Iraqi Kurdistan have apprehended a significant member of the criminal Foxtrot gang, linked to various violent crimes in Sweden, including the recent killing in Skurup. The ongoing escalation of gang violence continues to tarnish Sweden's historically peaceful image.
