Expectations for a ceasefire deal rise as negotiations between Israel and Hamas advance.
As the discussion unfolds, a Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations informed the BBC that terms for a ceasefire deal in Gaza, alongside the release of hostages, are being finalized. This development coincides with comments from White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, indicating that a potential truce and hostage agreement could materialize "this week." An Israeli official, speaking to Reuters, confirmed that discussions have reached "advanced stages," hinting that an agreement might be reached in "hours, days or more."
In a series of diplomatic engagements over the last few days, U.S. President Joe Biden communicated with both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Qatar's Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, who is playing a mediating role in the negotiations. Sullivan also mentioned that Biden is scheduled to consult with Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi regarding the current situation.
However, Netanyahu is facing significant opposition from within his governing coalition, as ten right-wing coalition members, some from Netanyahu's own Likud party, have issued a letter expressing their disapproval of any truce agreement.
In the midst of these negotiations, escalating violence continues to plague Gaza, with the Gaza civil defense agency reporting over 50 fatalities due to recent Israeli air strikes on Gaza City. Civil defense spokesman Mahmud Bassal indicated that strikes targeted schools, homes, and public gatherings. The Israeli military stated that it is looking into these allegations, while claiming five soldiers were killed in the north of the Gaza Strip on the same day.
The current conflict ignited following a Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages taken to Gaza. In retaliation, Israel initiated a military campaign aimed at dismantling Hamas. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza has reported over 46,500 casualties since the beginning of the conflict, while Israeli authorities report that 94 hostages remain captive in Gaza, with 34 presumed dead, in addition to four Israelis abducted prior to the conflict, two of whom are also deceased.
